Message from the Presıdent

mayor of fatih-01

Every step we take in Fatih, which is both an ancestral heirloom and a world heritage site, is an expression of our respect for this place. With respect to the spirit of civilization that has permeated every stone, we work hard every day for Fatih both to protect the existing ones and to present the new works needed to our neighbors. To that end, we are proud to announce that Yedikule Fortress has opened its doors, for which we started infrastructure and feasibility works a long time ago, formed a scientific committee, and started researching on both its moral value and its current physical condition. Because it is possible to add value to the unique Fatih, to bring out the values in this district and to work harder every day for this.

We are now conducting a meticulous work in Yedikule Fortress, one of Fatih’s most precious places. Yedikule Fortress, which took its current form with seven towers and fortress walls built after the Conquest of Istanbul around the Golden Gate, which was established during the Eastern Roman Empire, will undergo a long restoration process. In this process, we will restore the towers, Golden Gate and pylons of the Fortress, prioritizing the damaged walls. During this process, the Fortress will be open to visit.

In addition to the restoration of the fortress, the Fatih Mosque, which was built by Fatih Sultan Mehmet Han right after the conquest, but whose minaret we can see today, is also being reconstructed. This mosque will be opened to visitors in accordance with the inwardness and spirit of the time when the Fortress started to become the “Yedikule Fortress” properly.

Yedikule Fortress has always been one of the prominences of Istanbul. It has always been a center and a precious area with its centuries-old history, legends and landmark events. Now Yedikule Fortress will be a restoration school for students, a historical place for visitors, a place for tourists to understand Istanbul, and a place for our children to experience their history.
